the first thing that comes to our minds about his great man is the grand anaicut - kalanai. such is the greatness of this man, he not only built a dam across the mighty cauvery but one of the firsts to bring pride to the chozha dynasty and the tamil race.

karikalan - the black legged one. ilanjetchenni, karikaalan's father was killed when his relatives burnt the palace down. karikaalan managed to escape from the burning palace, but got his leg burnt. thus karikaalan. hostory says his real name is thirumavaalavan and he had to lead a life in the forests till the day he regained power. a golden era thus started. centuries later, when the chozlargal reached unbelievable heights under rajaraajan and rajendran, karikaalan was still considered " the man ".

poompuhar - karikaalan's capital. tanjavor and pazhaiyaarai were the later capitals of the chozlas. poompuhar was one of the then most important ports at that time. silappadhigaaram, one of the five great tamil epics of the tamil language is set in and around this place. about a century after the rule of karikaalan, the chozhas lost complete control of the then tamilnadu to pallavargal
